Sandra is a Claims Team Leader working and living in London but soon moving to Scotland seeking a slower pace of life, so she has decided to find a new job close to her new home.
She sees an attractive job advert for a Commercial Broking Team Leader. Although they are seeking applicants with a solid background in commercial insurance broking, they point out that consideration will be given to candidates from claims or other areas of practice, looking for their career next move.
She applies and gets invited to an interview.
To prepare for the interview, Sandra takes the self-assessment for Broking Band 2 (which corresponds to the role she is applying for), to help her reflect on her current skill-set and identify at a granular level the competencies she needs to demonstrate during the interview.
She finds it useful to use the competency standards described under Impact, Drive to Deliver and Inclusivity to demonstrate her team leadership skills, as well as looking at Core Practice – covering core technical knowledge of insurance – to think about examples she can talk through during the selection process. It really helps her consider scenarios and skills she would otherwise wouldn’t have prepared for.
The interview was a success, as she was able to clearly demonstrate her impactful communication style, self-motivation in the working environment and positive and motivational approach to leading teams, as well as being curious about her development which she will need as she steps into a new practice area.
